A Chrome extension and mobile web app that summarizes webpages and YouTube videos with Gemini — right where the reader already is.

Problem

Reading long pages or watching long videos to find the key points is slow, and copying content into a chatbot breaks the flow.

Context

A Manifest V3 Chrome extension with a content-script sidebar, plus a standalone mobile web app because mobile browsers do not support extensions.

Architecture

Content is extracted in the page, passed through a fallback chain when the ideal source is missing, and summarized by Gemini.

Engineering decisions

Multi-step YouTube fallback
Not every video has a transcript, so extraction degrades gracefully: transcript, then description, then metadata, then general page content.
Sidebar instead of popup
A content-script sidebar keeps the summary next to the content being read.
Separate mobile web app
Chrome extensions do not run on mobile browsers, so the same capability ships as a responsive web app.
No external dependencies
Vanilla JavaScript keeps the extension lightweight and CSP-compliant.
